The Author

Yes that is me Susan Eldred.  It is not an easy job to describe yourself but I hope my enthusiasm comes through to you the reader.  I love my dogs, taking photographs, writing and teaching.  I often wonder if I should have been a teacher instead of an Estate Agent.  Yes one of the dreaded professions but someone has to do it.

I believe it is from the property world I learnt how to use descriptive words and take reasonable photographs.  My love of dogs started right at birth but I don't want to bore you with too many stories here as my Memoir is coming out soon and will tell you the tales that led to this point.

I am semi-retired (although doesn't feel like it).  I have shown and bred my dachshunds for the last nearly 20 years.  I still have the occasional litter.  I do administration for my long suffering partner part time and of course write books.

I have owned and loved many animals including horses, goats, various breeds of dogs (never without one), guinea pigs, chickens etc etc.  I am a great believer in exposing children to the world of animals from as young an age as possible even if its only a goldfish in a bowl.  They learn so much from exploring the life of the animal, its likes and dislikes, being dependent on another living being and empathy which is so important.

The Illustrator

Since a small child I have been fascinated by, and drawn, anything that flies, squeaks, gallops and barks leading eventually to a degree in illustration.

Many of my drawings have been used within the ceramic industry, such as Churchill China’s Country  Pursuits range that I designed. If you are a visitors to Crufts, many of my works are displayed on the Dachshund and Hungarian Vizsla stands on Discover Dogs.

I also have been showing a variety of breeds for over 20 years, though my heart belongs to Hungarian Vizslas and Wirehaired Dachshunds.

I do private commissions, portraits on paper or more unusually, wood.

I also design fabrics which in collaboration with my talented friend, we create a line of dog collars, harnesses and coats specifically for Dachshunds.

I also help run a charity Dachshund event yearly that attracts over 300 sausage dogs.

Betty

Betty is a Royal Kennel Club Registered Wire Haired Dachshund and her registered name is Dakotadax Check Mate (JW).  She was born and bred by my good friend Amy Dickinson.  She was born on the 1st July 2022 at my old house and her mother was bred by me called Derdledash Dakota at Dakotadax.  Her parents were my first two dachshunds Amiety and Brokk.  You can probably tell there is a special place in my heart for Betty being a granddaughter of two very special dogs.  She was also born the day before my birthday and somewhat sadly the day I lost my mothers mini wire haired dachshund Pepe Le Pugh.

Now you would think with this big build up she would be the perfect dog.   In many ways she is.  She has had an illustrious career in the show ring winning many first places including at Crufts, Best Puppy in Show twice, Best in Breed etc etc.  She has also been a great friend of our other dogs at home Captain, his mum Gretel and the lovely but now somewhat elderly Labrador Ark.

There is a gallery below which highlights some of her naughty exploits but you will be able to read more in my Memoir soon.

Betty and some of her "moments"

She is only just three years old but has been to many places and done many things most dogs would just dream about!
